Vampire Weekend often makes me feel like I'm listening to late-period Paul Simon. And I don't mean that as a compliment.
But I didn't come here to slag off the band as a going concern. Their debut bordered on terrific. This new album, on the other hand, doesn't do much for me. I ask you, Ben and CK, where's the hook?
Where's a radio-friendly single like "Oxford Comma"? Where's the next "M79" or (my personal favorite by several lengths) "The Kids Don't Stand a Chance"?
It's not as if "Contra" is a drastic thematic departure from "Vampire Weekend," so I feel justified in asking these “where’s the next… ?” questions. Give me a reason to keep listening, because these new tracks all blur together for me in one indistinguishable mass of aural B-sides from their debut.
JO, I can offer no real response except that you're pretty much right.
However, in all the singles and hooks that the album lacks, it still contains something which I enjoy. I'm having trouble putting my finger on what that something is, which probably is not a good sign.
I guess, if anything, I can attribute the weaknesses you describe to the "Sophomore Slump". Like many bands, Vampire Weekend's debut album, was in a sense, a Greatest Hits album. It is likely that all of the best hooks, lyrics, guitar licks, etc. that the band members had ever though of in their entire lives went into that album. It is hard to produce that same level of quality in only two years. I don't mean this as an excuse, but as an explanation for why I'm still able to enjoy it even though I know it's not on par with the last record, which, like you said was terrific.

I'm really enjoying White Sky. It makes yodel like a little girl.
