I think you should start a new one, 10 worst things about 2009. People like me like to complain.
I felt that 2009 was a down year for both music and movies, so I'll concentrate on books in this space.
Favorite Non-Fiction Reads of 2009:
1. In Cold Blood, Truman Capote
2. Consider the Lobster, David Foster Wallace - This collection of essays really drove home the genius of Wallace for me personally, after being somewhat underwhelmed by A Supposedly Fun Thing... and overwhelmed by Infinite Jest. There are at least four incredibly insightful and often hilarious entries in this compilation, none more amazing than "Up, Simba" a profile of John McCain's 2000 Republican primary campaign that simultaneously casts a critical eye on our electoral process, identifies the redeeming traits of the candidate in question during a particularly crucial week of the campaign, and anticipates the groundswell of popular support that would propel Obama to office eight years later. It is, quite simply, the greatest piece of political commentary I've ever read.
3. Into Thin Air, Jon Krakauer - The first half of this book had me questioning why I never bothered to climb Mt. Everest. The second half answered all those questions.
4. Helter Skelter, Vincent Bugliosi
5. The Gardner Heist, Ulrich Boser
6. The Lost City of Z, David Grann
7. Dreams From My Father, Barack Obama - Gave me a good sense of the values and priorities of our new President, with the added bonus that it was written before Obama's political career began (and thus seems less guarded).
8. Crossing the Chasm, Geoffrey Moore - An interesting prescription for transitioning technological inventions from a small cadre of early adopters to the broader market.
9. The Devil in the White City - Parallel tales of the men behind the ambitious 1893 Chicago World's Fair and H.H. Holmes, America's first serial killer who was murdering his victims just a few blocks away from the Fair's construction.
10. Eating the Dinosaur, Chuck Klosterman
Favorite Fiction Reads of 2009:
1. For Whom the Bell Tolls, Ernest Hemingway - I'd recommend reading the complete collection of Hemingway's short stories first. The first 2/3rds of this novel drags in parts, but it's all redeemed in the final 1/3rd, which is incredible.
2. Animal Farm, George Orwell - "Four legs good, two legs bad" was CK's high school yearbook quote.
3. Ham on Rye, Charles Bukowski
4. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Jane Austen
Most Disappointing Reads of 2009:
1. The Book of Basketball, Bill Simmons - Like most of the Sports Guy's columns of late, this was overly long and very repetitive by the time you hit the last, oh, 350 pages. Also, as an amateur sabremetrician, I'm annoyed that he prefaced this book by comparing his analysis to Bill James' Abstracts - which are almost exclusively based around statistics - then proceeds to spout biased opinions for 700 pages. I thought I would love this book, and I found myself fighting to get through it. Nice passage on Iverson, though, even if it ignores his entire thesis.
2. I Drink For a Reason, David Cross
3. A. Lincoln, Ronald C. White, Jr. - I wanted to like this biography, I really did. But Jesus Christ was it long and obsessively detailed. Want to chart the Lincoln family's moves across the American Midwest during Abe's childhood? Did you know that Lincoln was an imposing wrestler as a teenager? Are you interested in learning the finer details of his daily habits as a small town litigator? Well then, this book is for you. The rest of us can read the Emancipation Proclamation and Gettysburg Address online like normal human beings. If I had a nickle for every time I said "can we just get to the godd*mn Civil War already" while reading this book, I wouldn't be looking for a job right now.
