They've done a great job with the top 50, quite frankly. You can quibble on positioning - I'd personally have Arcade Fire #1, TVOTR in the top 20, Los Campesinos! in the top 50, and "Stankonia" as the best overall hip-hop album. In any event, for an indie-leaning site like Pitchfork to recognize the genius of The Streets, The Avalanches, "Madvillainy," etc., it demonstrates that despite the criticism frequently levied against that site, they do have a solid ear for quality.

I think another thing that emerges from this list and the top 500 tracks is that the only real intersection between critical acclaim and commercial success in the Aughts was in hip-hop. I don't know whether that's due to the genre being somehow less segmented than rock at this point, but it is striking, in many ways.

Revisiting Since I Left You as we speak...such a great f*cking album.

O'Leary, think your point about hip hop being less segmented than rock is spot on.
